On April 23rd 2000, Douglas Brian Shapiro, at age 49, succumbed to Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma after a long and dignified battle. While most people knew him as a kind, unassuming sales executive with a keen sense of humour, those who were lucky enough, knew him as so much more… A loving father, son, brother, uncle and fiercely loyal friend whose love of life and nature was closely intertwined with his passion for golf. At the time of his death, Doug was in the midst of organizing a "50th Birthday Golf Weekend" for fifteen of his friends who were all reaching this milestone that same year. This group, friends since childhood, together with Doug’s family pledged to take Doug's initiative one step further and hence was born an annual golf tournament to commemorate Doug’s love of life, his sense of humour and his passion for golf and to raise money for cancer research. This memorial tournament, now in its nineteenth year, has raised over $60,000 to date with all funds directly benefiting the Cancer Research Society.
In 2018, in hopes of boosting support for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma research, Doug’s family and friends decided to go one step further and create the Douglas Brian Shapiro Memorial Fund in partnership with the Cancer Research Society in honor of this special man who touched the life of so many. This fund will be open year-round to receive your donations and will provide grants to the best Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma researchers across Canada. In addition, the Cancer Research Society will match each dollar received by the fund, which will make our efforts pay off more quickly by getting our funds into the hands of researchers sooner.
Please do help us make a difference and contribute to this fund. Be assured that a receipt for income tax purposes will be issued automatically for all online gifts.
Thank you for your support.
